‘I’m going with the flow’ : EKTA KAPOOR
Ekta Kapoor is stepping out of her trademark zone by bringing out a new serial on farmer suicides, called Bairi Piya. The Soap Queen talks about her new venture:
Poverty stricken homes in India are similar, so if you see a village setting in Maharashtra or UP, it’ll tend to look similar. But if you see this show in detail, you’ll see we have shot in actual locations. There is no question that it is identical to other shows.
How will people relate to the show?
This is a positive and honest attempt at something I have always wanted to do. I liked this story and so did the channel; they approved it in 15 minutes and I started work on it. I think, when you do something honestly, then people like it. I have been getting positive responses for the promos, so let’s hope it stays that way.”
Why this social issue?
Everyone has social issue in their mind and wants to do something about it. I wanted to do a show five months on child marriages; I did it and someone else also did it. Seven years ago, I thought of doing a show on the saas-bahu relationship; then I had a thought to do a show on cursed love, so I did Kasauti. It is just a thought and it can occur anytime. This thought came because of some articles I read about a girl being mortgaged and another one being sold legally. People live lives where these things are part of the norm.
Did you have a channel in mind for this show?
One thing I can tell you is that I called up Ashwini Yardi in the middle of the night and asked her if I could meet her the next morning and narrate a story to her, as I thought it was something she could do. She asked me why, and I replied that it was something I was doing for the first time, and wanted to know if it had the scope to become a show. I am dealing with rural India for the first time. I narrated the concept to her the next day and she loved it. So yes, I had this channel in mind.
Do you approach a channel with the strength of the Balaji brand?
A channel is under lots of pressure and so am I. I never used my brand; I always use my story. Channels often just give me a slot straightaway, but I tell them not to do that; I tell them ‘Let me narrate the story and then you tell me whether you like it or not’, because it is the show which makes the brand and not the brand that makes the show. If the show is good, it will help my brand. I’d rather sell a show in which I believe and create another feather in my cap.
What kind of businesswoman are you?
Cautious, but a risk-taker.
Farmer suicides are happening everywhere in India, so why base it in Maharashtra?
They are predominantly happening in Vidarbha and around here. There are lots of cases in other parts of India too, but the poorest farmers live in Maharashtra. The government is doing a lot for them, but red-tapism and money lenders charging exorbitant rates are ruining the farmers. Though the government gives them aid, it’s the personal loans they have taken that they are not able to pay back.
You have been giving newcomers breaks in all yours shows, so why not now?
Till last week, I did not know that the girl who is playing Ameli (Supriya Kumari) has done Agle Janam... before this. I hadn’t seen the show and, honestly, I wouldn’t have taken her if I had known she was doing another show. I would have preferred it if she had been a fresh face, but it’s okay, we will present her differently.
Are you keeping with the current trend of presenting social issues in daily soaps?
I think I am going with the flow, but a little faster. The show deals with rural India but it will have emotional angles too. I will try to explore it in my own way. I think this show is different because it has a story that goes beyond a poor village farmer’s story into the lives of the people. The laws of attraction, love and relationships initially exist with the powerful and then the needy. You may be the biggest star in the world but you could be a slave to someone and have no control over that person.
Why did you decide to launch your show on amavas (September 18), an inauspicious day?
I asked them to change the day, but I guess they didn’t have another date. I just did my amma’s shradh. I have kept a roza also and an amavas fast. I keep rozas for 27 days every year. It was tough for me but I had to do it. I cannot break the fast during iftari as at 10pm I do the amavas puja. I will break it and go for namaz in the evening.
What is your explanation for the controversy over the auditions in which people had to kiss?
It is not under my purview. In any organisation, there are lots of people and each department is responsible for its own area of work. They are doing a cool show, and they had to ask people if they were willing to kiss on the show, but they kissed in the auditions only. I cannot say anymore because it has nothing to do with me.
